Will I be made aware if a card transaction has been attempted in an area that I have restricted?
Yes, we will send a text message to the mobile phone number you have registered with us to advise you of this. Therefore it is important that we have your up-to-date mobile phone number.
I would like to block my card for use in America as I have no plans to travel there but I regularly purchase goods online from retailers based in America - if I block my card for use in America, will I still be able to use my card online to purchase goods there?
Yes, as it is not possible to set geographic limitations for internet transactions. This means that where a specific geographic region is restricted but internet transactions are not, then it is possible for an internet transaction to take place in that geographic region.
Why will a Chip & PIN transaction be authorised in a region where my card has been restricted?
As Chip & PIN transactions are not as susceptible to fraud, it is very likely that it is you undertaking this transaction and you have forgotten to lift the restriction on your card before travelling. For your convenience, we will authorise this transaction and lift the restriction on that geographic region for a 4 week period, which should be sufficient to cover your period of travel.
If your card is a Mastercard debit or credit card, at the same time as lifting the restriction on the geographic region where the Chip & PIN transaction has taken place, we will also block the card for use in all other geographic regions. We will do this in order to protect you against unauthorised use of your card.
We will advise you via text message that a transaction has been authorised and that we have lifted the restriction on that region.
The Geoblocking settings on your card will automatically adjust in response to a Chip & PIN transaction in a geographic region or alternatively you can change the Geoblocking settings using our Mobile or Tablet Banking Apps, in eBanking or by asking an Adviser.
Where such a transaction is authorised and you have not made that transaction, then you must report this to the bank as a fraudulent transaction.
Are there any transactions not covered by Geoblocking?
Yes, offline transactions are outside the Geoblocking parameters. Examples of offline transactions would be some contactless, carparks, airplanes.
